I also can’t help thinking that this could either be a bad gameplay design or is accidentally an extremely meta gameplay design, as a high-minded comment on our phone-staring society? The phone is Marcus’ main weapon, an extension of his personality through his hacking, so it may be right that it is front and centre (sometimes literally in the screen). But the buzz buzz and its cloying eagerness to please is one thing Watch Dogs would do well to reengineer into something more organic and less intrusive.

I’m enjoying myself and would recommend Watch Dogs 2 even despite my Grinch-like griping. This for me is a prime example of a small gameplay mechanic derailing some of the good work the rest of designers put in. It obscures the action nicely and sure, why would I want to see the dude trying to murder me for simple trespassing? Because the action, my friends, doesn’t pause when you decide to stare at your phone.

Eventually it’ll buzz so much that I’ll break and look at the phone, the staggeringly good news is that it takes up a good quarter of the screen and there’s an awful lot of dead space on that phone screen (do I need to know the current weather in my imaginary town?). However, throughout this loop there’s the buzzing. The location is nice and different and I’m having fun exploring it, even if the driving is a bit pedestrian, avoiding the police is super tough, and they put the jump/climb button on R2 for some bizarre, ungodly reason. If you’ve played the game then you’ve probably quickly fallen into the gameplay loop and it is an enjoyable one, pick either a quirky main mission, or a quirky side mission and use your phone, remote control cars, or helicopters to manhandle your way to a hacking point. This is a welcome surprise from the studio which brought us Connor Kenway, the video game equivalent of a massive, bored sour-faced shrug. It’s a total info dump which can be disorientating and detracts from getting to know the quite good characters – a bunch of funny, engaging, freewheeling hackers. It’s like having the rules to a playground game explained to you by a hyperactive kid who’s just downed two litres of Fanta and a 10-pack of double dips. It’s a long time since I played a Ubisoft open world sandbox game, the last was Assassin’s Creed Unity (I haven’t started Syndicate yet) so I it took me a moment to remember what it’s like.

Anyway, onto Watch Dogs and the reason for this feature. Also, Stardew Valley seems to have set up shop near the limbic functions of my brain at the moment, so Dishonoured may have to wait a while for its debut play.

I haven’t got a free weekend for a while so I’ve only managed to start Watch Dogs so far. I figured that Watch Dogs would be the dip in and out game, whereas Dishonored would require a free weekend to delve into.
